Technology Assessment

Technology assessment (TA) can be defined as a class of policy studies that systematically examine the effects on society that may occur when a technology is introduced, extended, or modified. It emphasizes those consequences that are unintended, indirect, or delayed. It is an interdisciplinary approach to assess the potential damages caused by commercialization of a new or existing technology. TA studies uncover assumption and fears, determine risks, and point out agreement and controversy of a new technology, and typically the outcome of the assessment is published to communicate to nations’ leaders and help policy makers with decision making.
