Mission and Mission Statements

A mission statement is a clear, concise declaration of a person’s or an organization’s purpose. It provides the direction in which one wishes to proceed. A personal mission statement focuses on one’s goals in life. A personal or group mission is most clearly articulated in a formal, written mission statement. A business firm’s mission statement is formulated as a broadly phrased statement of the firm’s long-term goals; it distinguishes the firm from others in its industry and specifies the scope of the operations in terms of the firm’s product, service, or market. It spells out goals, is a statement of aspirations, and focuses on actions. At its best, a mission statement provides energy and enthusiasm to the organization’s members.
