Hostile Work Environment

Many people complain about salary equity and promotions, but those complaints do not rise to the level necessary to be considered as a hostile work environment. This entry defines hostile work environments, establishes the significance of this phenomenon, and considers some individual and organizational solutions. This entry also examines some of the legislative and practical measures needed to mitigate development of hostile work environments and their persistence over time.

Hostile Work Environment Defined

It is important to recognize that being unhappy on the job does not necessarily mean one’s work environment is hostile. Likewise, petty behavior or isolated acts of hostility do not necessarily constitute a hostile work environment. The following are two definitions.
