Freelance Services Economy

The freelance services economy is a fast-growing portion of the United States workforce. Freelance workers are people who are working independently in ways that we largely understand as contract work. In popular media, this workforce is discussed as part of the gig economy, in which fewer and fewer citizens have traditional jobs or careers with one employer. Instead, freelance workers maintain an economic livelihood through a series of gigs, or temporary contract positions. Thus, freelance workers maintain only arms-length relationships with their employers, existing separately from their 9-to-5 counterparts. For employers, the benefits of the freelance services economy are largely financial, as freelance work arrangements save significant labor costs.
