ARTHUR MEIER SCHLESINGER, Jr., prominent historian and social critic, was born in Columbus, Ohio, son of a well-known historian of the same name. During his youth, he began to follow in the footsteps of his father, showing interest in American history and social issues. Schlesinger attended Harvard University and graduated in 1938. Almost immediately following his graduation, he became a member of the university's Society of Fellows. He remained with the Society of Fellows until 1942.

During World War II, Schlesinger's intelligence and talents were not ignored. He obtained a post in the Office of War Information, where he worked from 1942 to 1943.
