CAREY ESTES KEFAUVER was a lawyer, Representative, and Senator from Tennessee. As his later political career reflects, he was born and raised on a small farm community in Madisonville, Tennessee, in July, 1903. He attended the public schools in East Tennessee and graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1924. Kefauver then matriculated to the law school at Yale University from which he graduated cum laude in 1927. Admitted to the bar in 1926, he practiced law privately in Chattanooga until being elected on the Democratic ticket to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1939.
