Home-based businesses (HBBs) are generally understood to be ventures that operate at or from the owner's home residence. In a sense, all HBB activity is entrepreneurial, as HBB owners by definition have possession of a new venture based on an idea and have accountability for its inherent risks and outcomes. HBBs are very common entrepreneurial start-up businesses; many highly successful companies began in someone's kitchen, garage, or bedroom. HBBs can operate from rural or urban areas but most research about HBBs focuses on activity in cities and developed urban areas.
