To barter is to trade or exchange goods, services, or things of value for other goods, services, or things of value without using money as the medium. There are hundreds of formal barter exchanges located around the world in both developed and developing countries and likely thousands of informal systems of barter. The International Reciprocal Trade Association (IRTA) is a nonprofit organization with the stated mission of being committed to promoting just and equitable standards of practice and operation within the modern trade and barter and alternative capital systems industry, and raising awareness regarding the value of these processes.
