The convenience and affordability of transport services have changed radically over the last 50 years. Increased carrying capacity—through the development of wide-bodied jets and very large cargo carriers, for example—has extended distances and routes while reducing unit costs per mile traveled. Such innovations have facilitated the globalization of economic activity and the expansion of leisure travel. The continued search for convenient access, affordable travel, and reliable shipment of goods has provided and continues to offer opportunities for new ventures and new models for the conduct of business operations, although entrepreneurialism is more evident in some parts of the transport sector than in others.
