Education is the formal process by which people learn, utilize, and analyze knowledge; it occurs at both the individual and institutional levels. Multicultural education refers to any education program that aims to improve the educational experiences of racial or ethnic minority (REM) students or students who may be considered a minority as a result of their gender, religious orientation, sexual orientation, or disability. Although the initial goal of multicultural education was to integrate diversity into American education systems, currently the majority of multicultural education programs are designed to improve the quality of education for REM students.
