Indigenous Treatments: Shamans

A shaman is a man or woman who enters an altered state of consciousness at will in order to contact and use an ordinarily hidden reality to acquire knowledge or power and to help people. Derived from the language of the Tungus people of Siberia, shaman is the term adopted by anthropologists to refer to people known as witches, witch doctors, medicine men and women, sorcerers, wizards, and magic men and women. Shamans have practiced for thousands of years in different cultures worldwide. Long recognized as healers, these individuals are believed to possess awareness, knowledge, and skills that grow out of a timeless wisdom.
