Balance exercises are a critical component of any exercise program, as they can help maintain optimal strength and function and prevent falls among older adults. Falls, unfortunately, are common among older individuals, with one-third of those aged 65 years and older living at home suffering a fall each year. While the majority of falls do not result in a significant physical injury, about 10% of falls do result in fracture, bruising, laceration, or head trauma. There is a tendency to blame the environment for the falls that occur; the majority of falls, however, are due to intrinsic factors within the individual (e.g., changes in gait, balance, vision problems, dizziness).
