The acronym RICE stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation. This method is accepted as a basic treatment for many simple acute musculoskeletal injuries. Using the methods of RICE in the treatment of acute injuries will help reduce pain, inflammation, muscle spasm, and swelling. By counteracting the body's initial response to an injury, RICE promotes healing and an efficient, timely recovery from injury.


The objective of RICE is to limit the amount of injury-induced bleeding to the damaged structure as well as the surrounding soft tissues.
