John C. H. Wu (Wu Jingxiong, 1899–1986) introduced the most representative works concerning Roscoe Pound's (1870–1964) sociological jurisprudence to Chinese readers between 1924 and 1926. This marked the beginning of sociological studies about law in China and led to the tendency of confusing sociological jurisprudence with sociology of law as well. The first book on law and society by a Chinese author, Zhang Zhiben (1881–1976), a famous jurist in Republican China, was published in 1931 and reprinted several times. After 1957, however, the government suspended related activities for about 20 years in the People's Republic. During this period, Marxist critical theory of law and society occupied the dominant position in the fields of social science.
