Jellinek, Georg (1851–1911)
The son of a prominent rabbi and Judaic scholar, Georg Jellinek was born in Leipzig and grew up in Vienna. There, and in Heidelberg and Leipzig, he studied law, philosophy, and history. He earned a doctorate in philosophy in Leipzig in 1872 and a doctorate in law in Vienna two years later.
Beginning in 1879, he served at the University of Vienna as lecturer and then as associate professor. Despite his major treatises of the 1880s, Jellinek had little prospect of an appointment to a professorial chair in Vienna, owing to the pervasive anti-Semitism of his day. He decided in 1889 to leave Vienna, initially planning to go to Berlin, but then, surprised by the offer of a chair in Basel, he went there instead. ...
