The Research Committee on Sociology of Law (RCSL), founded in 1962, has remained the only international organization in the field of sociolegal studies. Formally, it is one out of more than fifty research committees of the International Sociological Association (ISA). However, because of its interdisciplinary subject matter, the RCSL has attracted a considerable following among legal scholars as well as sociologists. Since 1989, it has been responsible for the work of the International Institute for the Sociology of Law in Oñati, Spain.
