International Institute for the Sociology of Law (Oñati)

Founded in 1989, the International Institute for the Sociology of Law (IISL), located in Oñati, Spain, has become a point of reference for sociolegal scholars all over the world. It is a joint enterprise of the International Sociological Association's Research Committee on Sociology of Law (RCSL) and the Basque Government. It offers workshops, their published results, a master's program, and a specialized library and documentation center.

During the 1980s, discussion within the RCSL demonstrated the need for a communication center to overcome some of the problems inherent in the development of the sociology of law as a scientific discipline.
