DGS Sektion Rechtssoziologie (German Sociological Association Legal Sociology Section)

The Sektion Rechtssoziologie is the legal sociology section of the German Sociological Association (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie, or DGS). Its aim is to further teaching and research in the field of sociology of law, within both law and sociology faculties. Its history forms an example of the politics of academic associations.

Many trained lawyers were among the founders of German sociology. Sociology of law, in fact, formed one of the first specialized fields of sociological research. However, German disciplinary history took another direction. After World War II, sociology of law developed hesitatingly in the Federal Republic of Germany, while the Communist government in East Germany strictly forbade any attempts to develop it.
