Critical theory is a key term in the humanities and social sciences that has a wide range of meanings and usages in contemporary art history, cultural studies, film studies, literature, and philosophy. One definition of critical theory points to its historical and intellectual beginnings with the Frankfurt school in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s.
