The idea of the gaze is credited to the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan as developed in his Seminar XI, Les quatre concepts fondamentaux de la psychoanalyse (The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis), held in Paris in 1964 and published as a book in 1973.
