Science and technology studies (STS) is a new and dynamic interdisciplinary field that tries to understand how science and technology shape human lives and livelihoods and how society and culture, in turn, shape the development of science and technology. Instead of looking at science and technology as value-neutral, function-oriented concepts, it examines how science and technology are human institutions, situated in wider historical, social, and political contexts. It seeks to understand the origins, dynamics, and consequences of science and technology. The discipline tries to develop increasingly sophisticated understandings of scientific and technical knowledge and of the processes and resources that contribute to that knowledge.
