Government Role in Green Health

Although much of the green movement is being led by private organizations, government organizations are funding many programs and informational materials. With regard to health, these run the gamut from community-based health initiatives to improve outcomes to the publication of guidelines to help healthcare providers incorporate green principles into buildings and operations.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the federal driver behind pollution prevention. One of the challenges of greening healthcare is that waste and toxicity are inherent to the industry. Medical waste is biohazardous and must be disposed of in a way to protect the public; disposal of pharmaceuticals creates toxins; and personal protective equipment necessary for the workforce generates additional waste during service delivery.
