Bailey, Liberty Hyde
Liberty Hyde Bailey (1858–1954) was an American horticulturist, botanist, and cofounder of the American Society for Horticultural Science. He was a man of many interests and talents, a man of perception and insight. Professor Jules Janick described him as an extraordinarily successful scientist, teacher, administrator, poet, and philosopher who profoundly influenced the direction of teaching, research, and extension in horticulture in the United States. He was educated at and taught at the Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University) before moving to Cornell in Ithaca, New York, where he became dean of the Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
