The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is an organization set up by the United Nations (UN) at the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm, Sweden. Its secretariat is based in Nairobi, Kenya. The UNEP budget is provided by voluntary contributions from member states, and the UNEP employs around 900 people. It is not a funding agency, but rather seeks to promote policies and programs that will be funded by other agencies and provides scientific advice to organizations such as the World Bank and the UN Development Programme (UNDP).
