Sierra Club

The Sierra Club is the oldest grassroots environmental organization in the United States. It was founded in 1892 by the pioneer environmental preservationist John Muir (1838–1914), who was its first president. It is particularly associated with the protection of large areas of wilderness in as natural a state as possible and was instrumental in the creation of several national parks, notably Yosemite. However, today it also has policies on a much wider range of issues.

The Sierra Club was established as a regional California organization with the goal, as its name implies, of preserving mountainous areas, in particular the Sierra Nevada.
