Beijing is one of the world's truly impressive cities, with a 3,000-year history and 15.38 million people. Contrasts between ancient and modern pervade this city, which is surrounded by blue sky, grassland, and clean rivers. Beijing, the capital of the Peoples Republic of China, lies in the north of the North China Plain, adjoining the Inner Mongolian Highland. Covering 16,808 square kilometers in area, Beijing is the political, economic, and cultural center of China. Five rivers run through the city. Beijing has a long history, and it has been China's capital for more than seven centuries.
