Bluebelts

Bluebelts are undeveloped areas retained by cities to provide stormwater catchment and wetland-based wastewater management to supplement or replace conventional constructed sewage and wastewater treatment systems. With the widespread growth of suburban populations, many standard storm- and wastewater management systems require updating and expansion. Bluebelts are another, environmentally friendly way to sanitize water and ensure proper drainage. In many areas, suburban and rural expansion has outpaced the municipality's ability to create infrastructure to handle wastewater and surface runoff drainage. In some cases, the installation of conventional water treatment piping would destroy protected wetlands. Compared with conventional drainage systems, blue-belts are known for being ecologically sound and extremely cost-effective.
