THE REPUBLIC OF Rwanda, located in central Africa, has a land area of 10,169 sq. mi. (26,798 sq. km.), with a population of 9,725,000 (2006 est), and a population density of 829 people per sq. mi. (320 people per sq. km.), the second highest in Africa, and the highest on the African mainland. Some 35 percent of the country is arable land, with 18 percent used for meadows and pasture, and 10 percent of the country remains forested. [Page 876]
