Atheism

Atheism is literally the belief in no God and in general refers to the rejection of religion. The great psychologist of religion, William James (1897/1956), described religion as “faith in the existence of an unseen order of some kind in which the riddles of the natural order may be found explained” (p. 51). Atheists (derived from the Greek atheos, or “godless”) are those who do not believe that such an unseen order exists and assume that this world (with its natural order) is the only one. Each religion offers a unique description of the spirit world and how we should negotiate with it.
