A spatial query is a means of accessing the geometry, attributes, and relationships of spatial features within a spatial database. Access to information in a database involves formulating a question (query) to put forward a request for the desired information. A spatial query involves access to spatial objects and their properties. When such a query involves spatial information or when spatial information is included in the response to the query, there needs to be a way of formulating the query to accommodate the spatial information. In other words, a spatial query provides a means of referring to spatial data or its properties in order to identify the appropriate spatial or nonspatial information being requested.
