Scientific understanding of geographic phenomena often depends on the collection, analysis, and interpretation of observational data. With increasingly powerful and spatially enabled data-gathering techniques, such as remote sensing, census survey, global positioning system (GPS), and sensor networks, large volumes of geographic data are being accumulated at an unprecedented speed in many application domains, including climatology, public health, environmental science, business, and transportation, among many others. These data hold great potential to provide valuable and previously unknown information to understand and solve complex real-world problems. However, it is a great challenge for researchers to discover new knowledge from such large and complex data sets.
