Education of Health Care Providers: WHO Family Health Nurses

In 1998 the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe produced Health 21, the Health for All policy framework for the WHO European Region, which resulted in the production of 21 targets on health for the 21st century. In response, WHO Europe fashioned a new role titled the family health nurse (FHN) and determined that this new type of nurse would make a key contribution within the multidisciplinary health care team. WHO Europe consists of 53 nations ranging from the United Kingdom and Portugal in the West to the Russian Federation in the East and Israel in the South; it also includes many of the former Soviet States as well as all of the Scandinavian countries.
