(b. 1955, The Netherlands). Ph.D., M.A., B.A. Sociology of Education, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

VanderPlaat is Associate Professor of Sociology and Women's Studies and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Criminology at Saint Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and has worked extensively with Health Canada's Population and Public Health Unit.

Her work has focused on the development of evaluation approaches based on critical theory and the principles of social inclusion, particularly in the field of community-based health promotion. Her work has been influenced by a number of people, including Jürgen Habermas, Seyla Benhabib, Patti Lather, Nancy Fraser, John Forrester, Frank Fischer, Jennifer Greene, and David Fetterman.
