Light is Walter H. Gale Professor of Education in the Graduate School of Education and Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Light's work emphasizes applications of statistics and research design to challenging problems in American education. He has contributed to understandings of how to collect and analyze information to improve program management, including analyzing how evaluators can play a vital role in shaping public policy. Light coauthored Summing Up (with Judith Singer and John Willett) and By Design (with David Pillemer), and he is the author of Making the Most of College, which won the Stone Award for the best book on education and society.
