A navy is the branch of the armed forces designated for operations conducted at and from the sea. The nature of this military organization and the manner in which it operates is very different from either armies or air forces. This depends on the unique features of the maritime environment, which in turn affects the characteristics of naval platforms.

The sea is a vast, freely accessible and, for the majority of time, empty realm that covers more than 70% of the world’s surface.
