The concept of body armor has existed from the dawn of humanity as people developed weapons and sought to defend themselves against their aggressors. As weapons have grown in sophistication, so has body armor. Body armor is a piece of protective equipment worn on or around the torso to prevent damage to a person’s vital organs. There are many different types ranging from ancient hoplite (Greek) leather vests and medieval plate armor to modern-day flak jackets and ballistic vests. Armor can be of two varieties, soft or hard. Soft armor consists of multiple layers of protective fabric. Soft armor is generally used by police officers, civilians, and bodyguards.
