Targeting Systems

Air, land, and sea military forces use a number of mechanisms, either individually or together, to designate a target for attack, via a process known as fire control, and to guide a weapon toward its target.

Laser, optronic, satellite, radar, and infrared mechanisms are used by the military for targeting. Each of these techniques has advantages and disadvantages. It is for this reason that contemporary armed forces do not use a single targeting process to the exclusion of all others.

Laser Targeting Systems

The process of light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (LASER) can be used for several targeting system applications, including laser target range finding, laser target designation, and laser weapons guidance.
