The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) consists of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Each country has its own network of state-funded health care organizations. NHS (National Health Service) Scotland, NHS Wales, the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety in Northern Ireland, and the NHS in England all have similar aims that revolve around health promotion and helping people to sustain and improve their health by ensuring efficient and effective access to health care. The majority of health care services provided by the NHS are free for patients and paid for through general taxation.
