Consumer demand for flexible access to personal health information and federal policy requests for electronic medical record (EMR) implementation promote the adoption of online personal health records (PHR) globally. Although no universally agreed definition of PHR has been established, according to the Markle Foundation's Connecting for Health collaborative, personal health records is defined as an electronic application that can be used by individuals to access, manage, and share their health information, and by others whom individuals have authorized, in a private, secure, and confidential environment.
