National Science Foundation

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that is responsible for support of scientific and engineering research conducted primarily in American universities. Research supported by the foundation has provided knowledge of the global dynamics and concentrations of gases, such as carbon dioxide, ozone, and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere, made possible the ability to predict giant solar storms, afforded early warnings of severe weather, revealed the existence of plate tectonics and uncovered its role in earthquakes and tsunamis, investigated techniques for the reverse engineering of the brain, and developed materials capable of repelling water, capturing solar rays, and preventing the occurrence of icing, among many other notable studies and investigations.
