Continuing education is a panoptic term typically used to describe any type of formal education provided outside the parameters of traditional elementary, secondary, and postsecondary sources. Due to the rather broad definition of continuing education, it is difficult to clearly define what it is because that determination is often made by the educational institution offering the continuing education programming. Quite often, continuing education is defined not by a clear set of criteria relating to the characteristics of the educational opportunity being offered but in terms of its relation to other offerings in the unit of an educational institution that happens to have the title of the Division of Continuing Education or Continuing Education Department.
