School Violence and Safety, Community Policing Strategies for

The goals of community policing include building closer ties between the police and the community, identifying and addressing the underlying problems within a community that contribute to crime and delinquency, and involving the participation of the community in crime-prevention strategies. Community policing strategies for the prevention of school violence and safety encompass a number of approaches that build on these goals. This entry discusses the community policing approaches that are most widely used in addressing school violence and safety within U.S. schools, including the School-Based Partnerships (SBP) program, Child Development and Community Policing (CD-CP), the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program, the Gang Resistance and Education (G.R.E.A.T.) curriculum, and the School Resource Officer (SRO) program.
