Publicity Campaigns

If the heart and soul of problem-oriented policing is the development of innovative efforts to reduce crime and social disorder, then police agencies that undertake such interventions may consider advertising their work and ideas to their public. Departments can spread the word about their problem-solving philosophy and initiatives while encouraging citizens to help remove crime opportunities and to adopt better self-protection measures (while also warning potential and actual offenders of increased police vigilance or improved police practices).

When designed properly, publicity campaigns can offer police departments another problem-solving tool in the fight against crime. This entry discusses the various methods by which citizens—and media—can be reached, educated, and brought to bear in addressing neighborhood crime and disorder.
