The Tibetan Diaspora is a transnational community dispersed in exile across four continents and connected by the Tibetan language, culture, religion, and a governing body—the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA). Education continues to play a major role in Tibetans' migration and global dispersion by both supporting and threatening their sustainability as a distinct people with a common language, culture, history, and sense of mission across generations. Consequently, the Tibetan Diaspora is a key case in considering the impact of education on global bio-ecological, linguistic, and cultural diversity and sustainability in the 21st century. This entry describes formal education in South Asia, in both monastic and secular-modern forms, as well as informal education for the Tibetan Diaspora outside South Asia.
