South Asian Women and Girls, Education of

This entry begins by defining and describing the South Asian region; it then takes a brief look at historical aspects of the education of women and girls in South Asia. However, the main focus is on the recent or current educational situation, especially in the context of internationally agreed targets of Education for All (EFA) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The main challenges and changes are discussed. Finally, there is an analysis of the implications for other countries. Within the available space, it is not possible to explore a number of important areas; these include the overall quality and relevance of education, nonformal education, adult literacy, and education for girls in faith-based schools.
