Preservice and Inservice Diversity Courses

The curriculum of teacher education programs includes all that preservice and inservice teachers have the opportunity to learn and experience. Diversity courses endeavor to prepare teachers to meet the complex and multifaceted needs of PreK–12 students, and are designed to provide a repertoire of knowledge, skills, dispositions, attitudes, and practices necessary to address students' learning, academic, and social needs.

Overview

While diversity courses in preservice and inservice teacher education vary in terms of scope and content, the courses typically address the following:

Knowledge: what teachers know regarding the content they will teach, the context in which they will teach (urban, rural, or suburban), and the students they will teach. Diversity courses also tend to gauge and address the knowledge teachers have about curriculum design and instructional practices.
