Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Students: Teacher Preparation for Diversity

LGBT issues are increasingly becoming part of teacher preparation, although not yet as thoroughly or comprehensively as are required to meet the needs of LGBT students and teachers. When teacher preparation does address LGBT issues in detail—explaining the diversity of LGBT people in terms of race, gender, gender identity, class, religion, and ability—it can provide ways to challenge stereotypes and stimulate inclusion of diverse LGBT-related issues into public schools. The research and theoretical literature indicate that preservice and inservice experiences can help prepare teachers to understand the importance of having LGBT teachers and administrators and allies as role models for students.
