Grants have played a key role in the growth of the educational sector in the United States and abroad, and in supporting research within educational institutions. Grants have not as yet, however, been a large or integral part of the proliferation and growth of distributed education. This may be due partly to the organic nature of distributed education's emergence within the educational sector, growing, for the most part, out of traditional educational institutions as an extension of the classroom delivery of educational matter.
