Strategic planning is the formulation of plans to achieve an organization's long- and short-range goals. This activity is framed by the decisions and actions that lead to and support the strategic plan and the evaluation and feedback that allow for adjustment to the plan going forward. These preliminary actions include the formulation or clarification of an organization's mission, philosophy, and goals; the evaluation and matching of internal conditions and capabilities with an assessment of the external environment; and the choice of the most desirable options to support the organization's mission.

The actual plan includes long-term objectives and strategies to achieve the most desirable options and the incremental short-term objectives and strategies (usually annual) that support those long-range plans. The plan is supported by details that include ...
