Alumni/ae are the graduates or former students of a university, college, or school. Each school may define its alumni/ae membership differently. Most will include all students who received a degree from the university, but some institutions will also include people who were enrolled for different amounts of time but did not graduate, or those who completed a certificate program. For example, the following is a description of six different ways that campuses define alumni, from a survey conducted by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), 2001:

  • Former students who have completed at least one year; other former students can apply for alumni/ae status.
  • Graduates of the university, excluding those who graduated only from its continuing education program.
